NASA Reports Satellite Analysis Finding More Amazon Fires
A new NASA report describes additional VIIRS analysis identifying candidate fires near Santarém that do not meet the threshold for official FIRMS products.
Additional satellite analysis finds more fires near Santarém
NASA's October 15 report describes researcher Shane Coffield analyzing VIIRS satellite observations for fires below the inclusion threshold of official FIRMS products. He says the analysis identified about 40 percent more fires around Santarém than FIRMS active fire counts show. Smoke, clouds and tree cover can obscure detection. Coffield plans to share candidate fire locations with the MapBiomas research network.
