Langdao’s EUV Prototype Is a Light Source, Not a Chipmaking Scanner
Langdao Silex has displayed an EUV light-source prototype. Its specifications remain company claims, and a complete chipmaking scanner would require much more.
The Short Version
Chinese startup Langdao Silex has displayed a prototype extreme ultraviolet light source at an industry fair in Shanghai, according to Tom’s Hardware. There is an important qualification: the report says the unit was not shown operating. Its reported output of more than 15 watts and continuous runtime exceeding 100 hours therefore remain company specifications, rather than independently observed results.
Why It Matters
The prototype uses laser-produced plasma: powerful laser pulses strike tiny heated metal droplets to generate EUV radiation. The report says such a source could support research into photoresists, inspection and optical systems even before a complete manufacturing machine exists. That makes a component useful to investigate without treating it as a finished production tool.
The Bigger Picture
A light source is only part of an EUV lithography scanner. Tom’s Hardware identifies additional requirements including collection and illumination optics, precision mirrors, wafer and reticle stages, and system integration. Improving one component does not establish that the remaining systems are ready. The report also describes the prototype’s current output as insufficient for high-volume chip production.
What to Watch
The first questions are independent operating tests and a clear explanation of where the output is measured. Langdao has not disclosed whether its reported wattage is measured at the plasma or after the collection optics. Those positions are not interchangeable: the report warns that direct comparisons with other suppliers’ figures can mislead. Demonstrated output, sustained reliability and integration progress would be more informative than a headline wattage alone.
What evidence would convince you that a laboratory prototype is ready for manufacturing?
