Google Moves Source Links Higher in AI Search Responses

Google is making links more visible in AI Mode and AI Overviews, while testing a separate section for official sites. Easier access still leaves the checking to readers.

Google is changing how its AI search answers point people to the web. In an October 15 announcement, the company said it was launching updates that place links within AI responses higher up more often. It is also making related-article links at the end of some responses more prominent, including image thumbnails. The changes concern AI Mode and AI Overviews, rather than a new search engine.

For an everyday search, the practical benefit could be a shorter path from a summary to the page behind it. Imagine checking instructions for a device: a nearby link makes it easier to open the original documentation and read the conditions that a short answer might leave out. That is a possible benefit of the design, not evidence that every linked page or AI answer is correct.

Some of the announcement describes experiments. Google says it will test a dedicated section near the top of an AI response for tasks where one or two official websites are especially useful. That section would explain why each link helps. Separately, the company is beginning to expand news-article carousels to additional locations and languages. A test or staged rollout should not be read as a promise that every user will see the same layout immediately.

The distinction between visibility and verification matters. Google’s own help page warns that AI Mode can make mistakes. More noticeable links give readers another way to investigate an answer; they do not replace reading the source. When a detail affects a decision, open the page, check its date and confirm that it supports the specific claim.

What remains to be seen is how useful these layouts are in ordinary searches. Google’s announcement describes the presentation changes, but does not establish how much more often people will reach original reporting. For readers, the useful habit remains simple: treat the summary as a starting point and follow the evidence when it matters.

What would make you more likely to open a source behind an AI answer?
