DJI’s Dock 4 Promises a Drone Battery Swap in 25 Seconds

DJI says Dock 4 can return a drone to the air in under 45 seconds by swapping batteries. Recharging the removed packs still takes much longer, Tom’s Hardware reports.

The Short Version

DJI’s Dock 4 automates a battery swap in 25 seconds and promises less than 45 seconds from landing to takeoff, according to Tom’s Hardware’s account of the company’s announcement. The dock is aimed at uses such as emergency response. These are reported company specifications, rather than independently measured field results.

Why It Matters

The time saving comes from replacing a depleted battery, rather than recharging it in seconds. The report says Dock 4 can charge two packs simultaneously, with an estimated 27 minutes needed to move each from 15% to 95%.

For repeated dispatches, that separates the drone’s time on the ground from the time needed to replenish a used pack. It could make the system more responsive, but the headline turnaround alone does not prove it can sustain any particular workload.

The Bigger Picture

Backup operation has a similar limit. With at least two packs loaded, the dock can reportedly continue swapping during a grid outage. Backup power does not recharge those packs, so this should not be read as indefinite operation without electricity.

Compatibility also matters: Dock 4 works only with the Matrice 5TD drone and requires DJI’s O4 Ground Station. It is a specific hardware system, rather than a general battery-swapping accessory for existing drones.

What to Watch

Tom’s Hardware reports partners in China taking orders for a Dock 4, Matrice 5TD and O4 Ground Station kit at 167,999 yuan for hardware alone. The report says it is not FCC-authorized or for sale in the US.

Independent tests of turnaround, repeated dispatches and outage behavior would help show how the claimed speed translates into dependable operation.

Where would faster drone turnaround matter more than a longer single flight?
